U12 ’97 Play Exhibition Against Mis-Habs

12/26/08

GRAPEVINE, TX – The Bulldogs’ opponent Monday was a familiar, yet unknown team. The Mis-Habs were undefeated coming into the game. They are a team put together for these types of games. They are a diverse, older team. They have a mixed age group with birth years spanning 4 decades (60s, 70s, 80s, 90s).

Through some extensive research, we were able to scout this “made for exhibitions team”. They have Andy “The Wrong” Way, a power forward, their leading hitter. They are coached by Bill, “Mr. Boston”, a tough, seasoned coach with an east coast style. There’s Bruce, “The Red Baron”, a versatile player, has been known to time shifts at youth hockey games. Jean aka “Frenchy” is one of their top players. As a lad, he was MVP of the Victoria Bridge Challenge, scoring 4 goals in the final against St. Lambert. Then, there’s Jim, “The Pylon”, a forth or fifth liner from some “I” league in Arizona. Joe “Fresh” Fresquez has re-invented the way to play defense, and he’s not afraid to drop the gloves. John “The Mummy” Moore is best known for his locker room antics with sock tape. John “The Pint” Sullivan relies on rentals for his crafty skating. Ken “The Collector” is best known for taking his hockey skills off the ice and utilizing them in collecting team dues for youth hockey (his wife ties his skates). Mark “The Burn” Burnett tore up the Lewisville Roller Hockey League (with his motorcycle). Steve “The Blanket” Sheetz is a solid all-around player. You are not scoring if he’s playing defense. He is also their equipment manger. Juha “The Cat” is best known for his unique youth hockey motivational techniques and is one of the Mis-Habs better skaters. Dr. Seuss has Thing 1 and Thing 2, this team has Ringer 1 and Ringer 2. Ringer 1 is Alexander Stewert and Ringer 2 is Scottie Kelton.

The Mis-Habs were down 5 skaters. Larry and Svea had Oval office duties. Shannon, “Hook Em”, was out with an undisclosed injury. Roger, “The Pilot”, was out with a lower body injury. Luiz, “Hat Trick”, was out. Apparently, there was some sort of dispute with a yard sign, and he refused to play. The Mis-Habs needed to borrow some of the Bulldog coaching staff and a Bulldog goaltender to play.

The Bulldogs started the game strong, but with Fresh and The Blanket anchoring the Mis-Habs D on the first shift, they couldn’t score. The Bulldogs let The Collector get open and he scored the first goal of the game. The Bulldogs had an up hill battle all game as the refs were calling this game one sided. But the Bulldogs fought through the phantom off side calls, the mysterious no-calls on blatant holds by the Mis-Habs to take control of the game going up two or three goals. The Bulldogs were not intimidated. In fact, they challenged, harassed, and at one point, jumped Burn and Fresh giving them the business. Three of them even took a run at Rak. Rak lost his helmet but dropped all three. This gave the Mis-Habs momentum and they retaliated. The Mummy planted a Bulldog defenseman and laid on him for 5 minutes. In the post game press conference, the Bulldog defenseman gave a different account. He said, “I broke the old guy’s fall and he couldn’t get up.” Then, a Bulldog forward checked The Pylon from behind giving him a face wash against the glass. At this point, the refs lost all control. The Red Baron took a run at Bulldog forward. Mr. Boston, from the bench, grabbed a Bulldog or two and prevented a couple of scoring opportunities for the Bulldogs. The Ringers (1 & 2), Frenchy, The Blanket, The Cat, and The Red Baron took over getting the Mis-Habs back in the game. With the Bulldogs up a goal and the Mis-Habs playing with a shortened bench, the Bulldogs sent their entire team out to defend. The Mis-Habs countered with their bench. The horn sounded and the Bulldogs would hand the Mis-Habs their first loss. The Bulldog fans were much calmer in this game. You didn’t hear, “from behind!” “hustle!” “you have to want it more!” “SKATE!!!!” “be aggressive!” “pass the puck” “the face offs in the zone!” “com’on ref, call it both ways” or “wake up pucks!”

This was a great game to end 2008 for the Bulldog players, coaches, and families. From Bulldog Hockey, we’d like to wish everyone a safe and Happy New Year!

How ‘bout dem Bulldogs!!

PLANO, TX – The Bulldogs had a league game scheduled today against the Plano North Stars. The Bulldogs were 2-0 out scoring the North Stars 9-2 in their previous two meetings. The Bulldogs didn’t have their “A” game today, and it showed.

The North Stars took the lead with 28 seconds remaining in the 1st period and never looked back. The North Stars were first to almost every loose puck. They out skated, out hustled, and wanted it more than our young Bulldogs today. The North Stars would add an empty netter for a final of North Stars 2, Bulldogs 0.

The Bulldogs fall to 7-5-2 in league play. They next play an exhibition on Monday against the Mis-Habs.

U12 ’97 Take 5 Points in League Play

12/14/08

By Bulldog Hockey

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK – The Bulldogs traveled north to play a trio of league games. Their first match up of the weekend pitted them against the Oklahoma City Blazers. The Bulldogs would jump out to the early lead. The Blazers would even it up late in the 1st. The Bulldogs re-took the lead with about a minute to play in the 1st period. Both teams would score in the 2nd. The Bulldogs took a 3-2 into the 3rd. With about 5 minutes to play in the 3rd, the Blazers would tie it up on a power play goal and send it into overtime.

In overtime, the Bulldogs couldn’t capitalize on the power play. This one would be settled in a shoot out. Solid goal tending in the shoot out would have it go 5 deep as the Bulldogs won the shoot out 2-1 and won the game 4-3.

In game 2, the opponent was the Farmers Branch Maple Leafs. The Leafs came out strong against a somewhat, sleepy Bulldog team and took the early lead in the 1st. The Bulldogs woke up late in the first to tie it 1-1. The Bulldogs would score 4 goals in the 2nd and 3rd to come away with a 9-1 victory. They had 43 shots on goal.

In the final game of the weekend, the Bulldogs were matched up against the undefeated Dallas Stars. The Bulldogs were 0-2 versus the Stars and had been out scored 10-1 in their previous two meetings. The third meeting would have a different flavor.

The Stars had the only goal in the 1st period, scoring at the 8:00 mark. The Bulldogs held serve and scored at the 4:31 mark of the 2nd to tie it up.  The Stars answered at the 10:23 mark scoring on the power play to take a 2-1 lead into the 3rd

The 3rd period played like a heavy weight championship bout, each team exchanging blow for blow. The Bulldogs landed the first punch, scoring a 5 on 3 power play goal at 2:19 of the 3rd period. The Stars countered just 96 seconds later to re-take the lead. The Bulldogs answered in just 50 seconds to tie the game 3-3.

The Bulldogs were not backing down in this battle. Just 94 seconds after they tied it, they took their first lead of the game at the 6:19 mark of the 3rd. The Stars answered once again with just over 2 ½ minutes to play scoring a power play goal. At the end of regulation, the score was 4-4. The Stars had their chances in overtime but the Bulldog goaltending kept it tied sending the game into a shoot out. The Bulldogs would lose in the shoot out.

The Bulldogs made the most of their chances scoring on 4 of their 12 shots. The boys played solid positional hockey and showed that hard work in practice does pay off. They play next Sunday against the Plano Northstars in league play.
